About Neeraj Chopra

Born to a farming family from the tiny village of Khandra, Neeraj Chopra has quickly become the heartthrob of over a billion people, after his historic throw on August 7, 2021 which made him India’s first ever Olympic Gold Medalist in Track and Field and India’s second individual Olympic Champion.

Having been introduced to the sport by chance as a chubby 13-year old, Neeraj took up the sport under the guidance of senior javelin throwers in 2011.  Armed with natural talent and a serious work ethic, Neeraj has staked his claim as one of India’s finest and most accomplished sportspersons ever at the age of 23.

In 2018 Neeraj became the second Indian track and field athlete to win back-to-back Commonwealth and Asian Games gold medals which made the global athletics world take notice. Tipped to be one of India’s brightest hopes for a first ever athletics medal, Neeraj suffered a major setback in early 2019 when he was hit by a career-threatening elbow injury that needed surgery and kept him out of action for the entire 2019 season.

Following an extensive rehabilitation process, Neeraj returned strong to qualify for the Tokyo2020 Olympic Games in his first competition back from injury, before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world and global sports to a standstill.

Despite the setback causing him to be away from international sport for almost two years, he kept training, motivated to create an impact at his Olympic debut. Neeraj's hard work and determination paid off as his second throw of 87.58m brought him and India the Gold!

Neeraj Chopra was recently awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (the country's highest sporting award).
